The Box Came Today...Now What Do I Do?
A CCTV Assessment and Training Resource
Karen McCall, M.Ed.has also published a book for assessors and trainers called "The Box Came today...Now What Do I Do? A CCTV Assessment and Training Resource."
The title for this work comes from several years of CCTV assessment and training with clients receiving their CCTV's, calling me and asking "The box came today karen, now what do I do?" This publication is for assessors, trainers and clients. Although it doesn't walk through the steps of assembling each type of CCTV, it does walk you through the features and training process with exercises and examples.
Part One looks at CCTV's or "video magnifiers" from a type and feature perspective, not a brand or name point of view. Information is provided on why clients might need both an inline and portable CCTV, what the difference between a handheld and portable CCTV are, why a client might need shading, reading lines, false colours and natural colours.
Part Two identifies items you should have in your assessment centres. These include age appropriate material, material for ESL clients [English as a Second Language] , students and older adults. There are ideas for making the asessment process less stressful for clients as well as the establishment of client based outcome measures. the outcome measures allow you to follow up on your clients once they've been using their devices for 6 months. They also provide a starting point for the training process.
Part Three gives you ideas and step by step processes for training clients on how to effectively use their new tool. how can a client read without getting seasick? What are some strategies for reading larger books? When should a CCTV be supplemented with OCR/scanning software [for students or those who have to read high volumes of print material]. How can a client make the most of all the features of their CCTV?
There is a supplement to the manual [included as a separate page] which contains line drawings based on the Texas School for the blind's use of line art during the assessment process. Various types of line art are provided from abstract images to concrete images. these allow the assessor to establish a client's ability to recognize, or pre-determine images based on visual information. A rationale for the chosen drawings accompanies this insert.
Karen also did a presentation at CSUN 2003 on Video Magnifier Assessment.
